NEW DELHI: Last year, one of the major tech events — Mobile World Congress (MWC) got cancelled due to the pandemic situation. However, this year the GSM Association which organises the annual MWC tradeshows is planning to hold MWC in person.
But the tech giant Google has decided to give a miss to tech trade show. Google has announced that it will not exhibit at MWC this year.
In an official statement, Google said, “Following our current COVID-19 travel restrictions and protocols, Google has made the decision to not exhibit at Mobile World Congress this year. We will continue to collaborate closely with GSMA and support our partners through virtual opportunities. We look forward to this year’s activities and seeing you in Barcelona in 2022.”
In February this year, GSMA confirmed that it will go ahead with holding the MWC 2021 in person in June. Attendees in Barcelona will require a negative Covid-19 test result (within 72 hours) and testing will be available at the venue.
John Hoffman, GSMA Limited’s CEO also mentioned that the GSMA will be using technology to create a “touchless environment”, from registration through to all events within MWC.
Hoffman also mentioned that this year Barcelona will also be different. “MWC Barcelona is expected to have a scaled back capacity, with Hoffman estimating between 40,000 and 50,000 attendees for its 2021 flagship event compared with around 110,000 two years ago.”
