Happy birthday Ram Gopal Varma: Did you know that Amitabh Bachchan was not the first choice for the maverick filmmaker’s Sarkar? | Bollywood Life

We being the day today by wishing one of Indian cinema’s biggest mavericks, a true enigma if ever there was one and one of our most unpredictable filmmakers the industry has ever seen. We’re talking about Ram Gopal Varma who turns 58 today, but ask him his age, and he’s likely to tell you that he’s not a day over 38; well…that’s Ramu for you. The man has given Bollywood some of its most iconic gangster movies courtesy titles like Shiva, Satya, Company and Sarkar. But, for every Company there’s also been a Contract, for every Shiva, there’s been a Department, for every Satya, a Satya 2, and for every Sarkar, a Sarkar 3. With RGV, you either get brilliant or balderdash — there’s seldom a middle road. However, on Ram Gopal Varma’s birthday, we’d like to revisit one of his classics, Sarkar, and stimulate your cinematic juices with some insane trivia. We all have marvelled at Amitabh Bachchan‘s performance as the eponymous Sarkar — as we have at most of the megastar’s characters — and it’d be sacrilege to even think of someone else playing the part for a fleeting moment. But, what if we were to tell you that RGV himself had conceived the movie years ago before he had actually made it with someone else in mind for the titular role? The actor we are talking about is Sanjay Dutt, and the revelation comes from the man himself in his biography, Guns and Thighs : The Story of My Life. In fact, Ram Gopal Varma had also shot about 20 days of the film, and that, too, under a different title. Sarkar was to initially be made as Nayak, years before it was made as Sarkar. However, after shooting for 20 days, Sanjay Dutt got caught up in his multiple court trials and eventual jail term and the film was shelved for several years before RGV resurrected it as Sarkar with Amitabh and Abhishek Bachchan. Mind blown, right? As we had earleir mentioned: That’s Ramu for you. Also Read – Ajeeb Daastaans, The Big Bull, Irul and more: Here’s your April watch list on Netflix, Amazon, Disney+Hotstar

Anyway, wish you a very happy birthday once again, Ram Gopal Varma. WE keenly await a return to your best form.
