Unveiling the Origins:Easter Lily. For those who celebrate the holiday, Easter is almost here. During the Easter season, homes and churches are adorned with the beautiful and fragrant white blooms known as Easter lilies. So, how did this flower become a traditional symbol of Easter? Lilies are often prominently featured in biblical stories and its pure white petals have long stood for the hope, purity and new life that comes with spring, making them the perfect representation of Easter.

WHAT IS THE HISTORY OF THE EASTER LILY?

Whether you are gifting your loved ones with a bouquet of Easter lilies or using them to decorate your own space, these flowers are a splendid and meaningful way to celebrate Easter. Read on to learn more about the origins of the Easter lily and why it has become synonymous with this special holiday:

  • Easter lilies are known as the, “white-robed apostles of hope” and were allegedly found in the Garden of Gethsemane after the crucifixion of Christ.
  • It is said that white lilies popped up where Jesus’ tears fell to the ground while still on the cross.
  • Lilies sprout from a bulb that is buried in the ground which then blossoms to life, offering a unique representation of the death and resurrection of Jesus.

HOW DO I TAKE CARE OF AN EASTER LILY?

Easter lilies are relatively easy flowers to take care of. Here are a few tips you’ll want to remember so you can get the most out of your flowers:

  • Easter lilies thrive in a medium level of moisture and should never be left standing in water for a long period of time.
  • Removing the yellow anthers from the centre of the flower will help extend the life of the white flowers.
  • They like bright indoor areas with natural sunlight but cannot tolerate too much sun exposure.
  • If you have a cat, keep them away as Easter lilies are highly toxic for them.
