February 2021 was a very sad period for me and my family. My father passed away suddenly on the 19th of the month. Upon hearing the news, I and my wife immediately rushed to be in Gurgaon from Hyderabad, where we work. Last rites were being conducted and there were rituals happening in the house. However, we were all cautious to take all precautions and kept using hand sanitisers, maintained distance and wore masks however possible.
After the rites and rituals, I was completing some bank formalities, around the 28th of February. Suddenly, during the evening, I started to feel feverish, had a cold and a splitting headache on top of my head. Thinking it to be a regular fever, I just took a paracetamol. However, the headache and fever didn’t go away. This was when I decided to not take things lightly and get myself tested. I decided to go for a COVID test at a nearby hospital. Somehow, strangely, deep inside I was confident that my assumptions were wrong and it was just a fever. How wrong was I! My test came back positive the next day. I was shocked and immediately isolated myself from the family. I asked my wife, brother and mother to go get tested too. I was more worried since my mother is 65 years old. As we thought, my wife and my mother tested positive too. Luckily, my brother tested negative for COVID despite staying with us all the time but it was a relief of sorts for us. We immediately shifted him to a hotel.
My wife was asymptomatic while both I and my mother had a fever and bad fatigue. We had zero energy and it almost felt like we could lay down all the time. Getting up, walking around was a big task. For us, temperature also used to repeatedly rise at night, disturb sleep but would go down whenever we took the medicine. As for the oxygen levels, my O2 levels hovered around the 94-95 mark but my mom’s sometimes went down to 90 as well. We kept a track of all vitals and remained attentive to how symptoms progressed.
Since my wife was asymptomatic, she helped and took care of us, prepared healthy meals for us. We also regularly had haldi (turmeric) milk, kadha, concoctions and all medications, remedies prescribed by our doctor. Touchwood, we started to feel better around Day 7 and by Day 10, all of our symptoms vanished. The doctor still advised us to take rest and isolate ourselves till the 17th day.
We are happy to have recovered and not suffer from severe symptoms and complications like we all have come across. However, from what I have realized, even a mild COVID-19 case can be scary. It’s not like your regular flu. COVID literally breaks your body. We suffered from excruciating fatigue that drained us out. The body takes a lot of time to recover from exhaustion, symptoms even after you test negative. It took us a complete month to come back to our normal routine and our exercise routine.
