A few hours prior to the celebration of the 72nd Republic Day, the government has announced the list of Padma Awardees, the some of India’s highest civilian honour. And the late legendary playback singer SP Balasubramanyam has been honoured posthumusly with Padma Vibhushan. Bollywood has no recipients this year.
Balasubramanyam is the only name from entertainment industry among seven names who are recipients of the second highest civil honour. Carnatic singer Chithra has been awarded with Padma Bhushan, third highest honour while singer Bombay Jayashri Ramnath has been awarded with Padma Shri.
In 2001, Balasubramanyam was honoured with the Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan in 2011 by the Government of India. Born in Nellore district of southern Andhra Pradesh, Balasubramanyam passed away on September 25 2020 at the age of 74 in a Chennai hospital.
Although the late Balasubramanyam is best known for his singing, he was a multi-faceted talent who made his mark as an actor, anchor, composer and film producer, too. He worked predominantly in the Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Hindi, and Malayalam film industries.
He has won six National Awards as Best Male Playback Singer for his works in four different languages — Hindi, Tamil, Telugu and Kannada. The famous playback singer and Padma awardee, popular known as SPB or Balu in the cine world and who recorded over 40,000 songs in 16 languages over a period of five decades.
